We Believe: A Deep Dive — Church & State
Join us this fall for We Believe: A Deep Dive, a special Wednesday night series led by Pastor Jeff Warren alongside guest scholars, theologians and professors as we explore the biblical truths and Baptist distinctives that have shaped the church for generations. Each evening concludes with a conversation and audience Q&A, offering practical insight into how these truths inform our everyday lives.
On Sept. 23, Dr. Steve Bezner will explore the historic Baptist understanding of the relationship between the church and the state. Together, we’ll examine why religious liberty and the separation of church and state have long been defining Baptist convictions, rooted in Scripture and shaped by the sacrifices of faithful believers throughout history.
Drawing from biblical teaching and themes from his book, Your Jesus Is Too American, Dr. Bezner will help us consider how the life and teachings of Jesus guide our engagement with government, culture and some of the most challenging issues facing Christians today.

ABOUT DR. STEVE BEZNER
Dr. Steve Bezner serves as associate professor of Pastoral Theology and Ministry at Baylor University’s George W. Truett Theological Seminary.
Before joining the Truett faculty, Dr. Bezner served in a variety of pastoral roles, most recently as senior pastor of Houston Northwest Church in Houston for 12 years, where he also served as adjunct faculty for Truett Houston. During his ministry in Houston, he served on the Executive Board of Texas Baptists, the board of the Houston Church Planting Network and with GlocalNet to plant churches and promote peacemaking across religious and racial boundaries.
One of Dr. Bezner’s greatest passions is coaching pastors and helping churches thrive in their unique ministry contexts. He has taught and written curriculum for a variety of ministries, including World Hope Ministries International, which provides theological education for pastors serving in remote areas around the world.
Dr. Bezner is married to Joy, and they have two sons, Ben and Andrew.
