John 1:15-18

The Light of Our Future

December 30, 2025 by Travis Cook

As we stand on the threshold of a new year, we face the ancient human anxiety of transition and change. This message takes us deep into John chapter 1, verses 15-18, where John the Baptist passionately declares that Jesus existed before him, despite coming after him in ministry. This paradox reveals something profound: Christ is both before and after every season of our lives. The sermon explores how the Romans invented Janus, a two-faced god of transitions, because they understood our deep need for something stable during times of upheaval. But we have something far better than a mythological deity. We have the real Jesus who walked through both the Old and New Covenants, who bridges every gap in our experience.

The message challenges us to examine whether we’ve created our own version of Jesus — a prosperity gospel Jesus or a comfort-only Jesus — who won’t hold up when life gets hard. Only the real Jesus, revealed in all of Scripture, can walk with us through cancer diagnoses, job losses, broken marriages, and every other disruption that 2026 will bring. The call is clear: we need to know the whole Jesus, not just the parts we like, because He’s the only one who can carry us through genuine seasons of change.
