John: The Beloved Disciple

March 15, 2026 by Dr. Jeff Warren

What if the identity we’ve built our entire lives upon isn’t actually who we are?

This powerful exploration of John’s transformation from ‘Son of Thunder’ to ‘the Beloved Disciple’ reveals a profound truth: God doesn’t just accept us as we are — He lovingly exposes the false identities we’ve adopted and replaces them with our truest identity as His beloved children. Drawing from multiple gospel accounts, we see how Jesus confronted John’s impulsive, prideful nature, his desire for power and position, and even his violent tendencies. Yet through years of cultivating a relationship with Christ, abiding in His love, and receiving entrusted responsibilities, John became the apostle who wrote more about love than any other.

The journey mirrors our own — many of us have adopted identities based on trauma, success, failure, or our vocations. But these are not the truest things about us. The message challenges us to examine what nickname or identity we’re living out and asks whether we’re willing to let Christ expose it, form a new one, and completely transform us. The key is found in abiding — remaining constantly in His love, pursuing Him passionately, and allowing His perfect love to so capture our hearts that we become people who love others without need for love in return. This is grace in action.
